DESCRIPTION:This spring\, the Southwest Association for Language Learning and Technology (SWALLT) and Humanities Technology\, are hosting an in-person conference on foreign language instruction focusing on creating communities. \nThis free conference will be held at the beautiful Clark Memorial Library on Saturday\, April 5\, 2025.  As space is limited\, we are asking everyone to please register to attend or present\, using this form. \nOur final agenda is now available! \nCall for Presentations \nWe are excited to invite proposals for presentations at our one-day conference\, Creating Communities through Language\, which will bring together local language educators from high schools\, community colleges\, and four-year colleges. This conference will feature keynote speakers\, networking opportunities\, and breakout sessions designed to foster collaboration and innovation in language education. \nWe seek presentations that explore how to create meaningful communities both inside and outside the classroom. Topics might include\, but are not limited to: \n\nStrategies for fostering classroom connections and belonging.\nInitiatives that build bridges between schools and local communities.\nCollaborative projects across educational levels or institutions.\nLeveraging technology and social platforms to enhance community building.\n\nPresentations can take the form of individual talks or posters. SUMMARY:UC Data Week - Visualizing Islamic Manuscripts data at UCLA Library
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Saad Shaukat (UCLA) \nUCLA library holds one of the largest collections of Islamic manuscripts (roughly 10\,000 items) covering multiple languages including Arabic\, Persian\, Turkish\, and Urdu\, and spanning nearly 9 centuries (12th-20th). Currently\, UCLA Library Special Collections is in the process of a multi-year effort to create digital records for its Islamic Manuscript holdings. At HumTech\, our team is engaged in a project to visualize the cataloged manuscripts through Tableau. The goal of this project is to represent a birds eye view of the Islamic manuscript holdings for interested researchers. Through representation of multiple data points that the library cataloging process captured from the manuscripts\, the visualization hopes to provide easy access to researchers for dissecting the data in multiple ways and helping them in drawing useful insights into the Islamic manuscript holdings at UCLA. In this presentation\, we will be discussing the challenges that we faced in data cleaning\, wrangling and visualization that are specific to manuscript collections\, especially one that is primarily in non-Latin script and spans to the pre-modern period. \nRegistration Required

SUMMARY:UC Data Week - Sharing and Locating Research Data in Humanities and Social Science Studies
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Tianji Jiang (UCLA) \nSharing and reusing data can effectively reduce redundant efforts in data collection. It also enhances the efficiency of scientific research investments by preventing the reinvention of the wheel. Building a sustainable data-reuse process and culture requires frameworks that include policies\, standards\, roles\, and responsibilities\, all of which must address the diverse needs of data providers\, curators\, and (re)users alike. A critical step in the data sharing and (re)use cycle involves researchers depositing their research data into data-sharing infrastructures\, keeping their data in a sharable and usable form\, making other researchers aware of their data\, and identifying data that are (re)usable for their needs. In this session\, I aim to introduce some ideas and techniques for preparing research data for sharing. I will also introduce 2 to 3 data repositories ideal for researchers depositing their data and seeking (re)usable data for their studies. Additionally\, I will offer several tips and strategies for identifying and utilizing (re)usable data effectively. The session is structured to last approximately 50 minutes\, comprising a 40-minute presentation followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer segment. \nRegistration Required

DESCRIPTION:The 6th annual Creating Connections symposium on writing pedagogy will take place Friday\, June 2nd. Our theme for this year is Generating Text: Teaching\, Writing\, and Learning in the Age of AI\, and this event is intended as a follow-up to the campus-wide “AI in Action” event on May 12th. Our half-day symposium will feature interactive workshops on using ChatGPT and similar technologies throughout the writing process as well as a roundtable discussion on the practical and ethical questions surrounding use of ChatGPT in the writing classroom. \nThe 2023 symposium is intended as an in-person event\, but we will provide a Zoom link for those who would like to watch remotely. \nThis symposium is organized by students in the Graduate Certificate in Writing Pedagogy in consultation with faculty and staff in UCLA Writing Programs.

DESCRIPTION:How can we leverage AI to support authentic learning while also mitigating potential harm to learning?  This is a national conversation happening across higher education\, and the applications vary across disciplines. When it comes to programming\, there is a lot of potential for supporting student learning-​- ​helping students understand why their code might be incorrect\, interpreting and providing documentation on lines of code\, and improving student code by making it more complex or more streamlined depending on the goal​ — just to name a few examples.​ ​L​ive virtual ​1:1 ​support​ via ChatGPT and other similar tools​ is ​now ​available 24-7 and ​accessible to all students\, regardless of their financial means​.​ In this modern age of AI\, how can we best leverage these new and emerging tools to support all students (in particular\, those who may need extra help)?
