SUMMARY:A.I. and Information Literacy Workshop and Discussion for UCLA Course Instructors
DESCRIPTION:With the increased integration of A.I. into the tools of education and business\, and the rise in the quality of output of generative A.I.\, the UCLA Library and UCLA’s Teaching and Learning Center invite UCLA instructors and instructional support staff to register for a free online 90-minute workshop and discussion on the implications of A.I. in higher education. \nThis workshop will focus on A.I.’s impact on: \n\nAssignment design\nStudent research and output\nInformation literacy skill development\n\nWorkshop organizers will discuss and demonstrate A.I. tools\, use of A.I. in research assignments\, how assignments can be scaffolded to support student learning and minimize students’ temptation to plagiarize and opportunities A.I. presents for incorporating information literacy instruction into courses. Attendees will be encouraged to share their own experiences\, syllabi\, assignment descriptions and learning objects in group discussions and collaborations.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with AI
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with AI: Hands-on Demonstration of ChatGPT and Other AI Tools\n\nMany of us have come across AI assisted technology from time to time\, like spelling and grammar checks and the suggested words on your smartphone while texting. And some may have used the suggestions from the AI. Here is a chance to see how you can leverage generative AI to help write your syllabus\, start lesson planning\, and even start a course presentation. \nSession facilitated by: Caroline Kong (CAT) and Katie Healey (EPIC & CEILS) \nDate: Wednesday\, May 17\nTime: 12pm – 1pm PT\nLocation: Zoom (Register for Zoom link \n

SUMMARY:ChatGPT for Programming
DESCRIPTION:How can we leverage AI to support authentic learning while also mitigating potential harm to learning?  This is a national conversation happening across higher education\, and the applications vary across disciplines. When it comes to programming\, there is a lot of potential for supporting student learning-- helping students understand why their code might be incorrect\, interpreting and providing documentation on lines of code\, and improving student code by making it more complex or more streamlined depending on the goal — just to name a few examples. Live virtual 1:1 support via ChatGPT and other similar tools is now available 24-7 and accessible to all students\, regardless of their financial means. In this modern age of AI\, how can we best leverage these new and emerging tools to support all students (in particular\, those who may need extra help)? How do we coach students on how to interact with AI responsibly and in a way that deepens their learning (and does not undermine it)? \nPresenters\nWilliam Stein\, CEO of SageMath and CoCalc.com will present on CoCalc’s AI tool and data collected on how students engage with that tool.  Sharmila Venugopal\, Assistant Adjunct Professor for Integrative Biology and Physiology will the Life Sciences Core will share her experiences piloting activities that ask students to engage with ChatGPT to compare and contrast their debugging skills with the AI generated responses. \nSession facilitated by:  Jess Gregg\, Senior Associate Director for the Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences (CEILS). Contact Jess at jessgregg@ceils.ucla.edu with any questions. \nLocation: Zoom (Register for Zoom link)
